Reflecting on Mary's Encounter: The First Resurrection Appearance

In the formal prayers of the Fourth Week of the Spiritual Exercises by St. Ignatius, retreatants are invited to contemplate the Resurrection appearances of Jesus. Surprisingly, Ignatius prioritizes Jesus’ encounter with His mother Mary as the first to consider, despite the absence of scripture on this specific event.

However, the significance of this encounter cannot be overstated.

Imagine Mary’s anguish as she stood at the foot of the cross, gazing upon her beloved Son, while the whispers of doubt echoed in her mind. Yet, in her deepest surrender to faith, she awaited the fulfillment of God's promise.

Thus, it was fitting that Mary, the epitome of faith and surrender, was the first to receive the glorious news of the Resurrection—the culmination of her unwavering trust.

Continuing her role as intercessor, Mary assures us: "It is well with our souls."
