The Love of God: Embracing Our Humanity This Advent Season

The Love of God: Embracing Our Humanity This Advent Season

Some might think it’s silly how we behave around children, especially parents. It’s as if we revert into some kind of playful creature. We get down on our knees, and even the most educated, intelligent, capable people will say things like:

Uuhghgabeuggnbbu, babaa, Ugghabbubu!

For the child, this behavior is not worrisome at all. It is delightful. In fact, this action is a most natural experience. We get at their eye level and speak like they do.

This is how love is naturally given: by lowering ourselves to the level of the beloved, by standing next to them rather than speaking from above.

Similarly, by coming down to our level, God Almighty lowered Himself to see the world from our vantage point and speak in words we could understand. This divine act includes and embraces our human suffering.

The mystery of God becoming human is akin to a loving parent getting down on their knees and speaking to us at eye level. God embraces our limited humanity in words and actions we can understand.

May we let ourselves be embraced by Christ this Advent season.
